What makes a successful convention center?
I believe that it comes from the convergence of five main factors:
Each must be present and balanced with the others in order for a design to be successful. Successful buildings sell well and are positive additions to their communities.
How does Populous approach this type of design?
We agree with the adage that "good design is a patient search." The discovery process is essential to achieving the best design solutions. Conversations with trade show delegates, planners, operators and city staff inform our understanding of each project.
What are people looking for when they attend a convention?
Increasingly, convention attendees are looking for a tailored experience. They want to multitask, connect, and they don't want to waste time. Conventions need to become shorter in duration and cater to the needs of the individual attendee. People are more likely to stay (or return) if they have a good experience – marked by comfort, convenience and connection to both people and information.
As designers, we can support these needs by creating spaces that are transformable, flexible and experiential. Predictability is out; variety is in. And connections to a city’s other offerings, including restaurants and entertainment districts, can broaden a convention center’s appeal.
